Australian simulation centre offers course on emergency response teams
Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, January 8, 2008
After one of his patients at Dandenong Hospital died from septic shock and cardiac arrest when staff failed to call Dr. Michael Buist or the Melbourne hospital's early intervention team in 2000, Buist set out to find an explanation, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News.
After extensive research, Buist discovered hospital staff members need to be trained on how and when to use the early intervention team. Southern Health Simulation Centre in Victoria worked with Buist to create practical real-life simulations in which a patient's health would deteriorate. The course aims to teach staff to control responses to stressful situations and think of all options available, reports ABC News.
Buist said the simulation training counteracts traditional training, which often produces an atmosphere in which junior staff members fear calling senior doctors, reports ABC News. When used, the special teams, also called rapid response teams, have helped to cut Dandenong's incidence of cardiac arrest from 90 to 12 per year, a figure recently published in the British Medical Journal.
