Report finds potential for quality improvement in Australian hospitals

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, December 25, 2007

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) recently released an annual report on clinical indicator data for Australia. The report, which has a nearly equal representation of both public and private healthcare organizations, found a wide range of clinical areas to improve upon. The report showed improvement in reduction in delays for discharge and unplanned overnight stays for day surgery patients. It also found a need for improvement on waiting times for less urgent patient in the emergency department.

In an ACHS press release, Brian Johnston, the organization's chief executive, said the report shows hospitals are willing to report data. More than 680 healthcare organizations participated in the report, which contains nine years of data.
