England's shortage of nurses puts infants at risk

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, December 25, 2007

England's National Audit Office found that a lack of trained nurses in 16 hospitals across the country accounts for double the amount of infant death rates in some areas compared to other hospitals, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Seventy percent of England's 180 neonatal units are consistently full, with three units above 100% capacity, according to the Telegraph.

Higher twin birth rates as a result of fertility treatments and more older and obese women giving birth have led to more babies in special care units, reports the Telegraph.
