With 5 million infected patients, China joins global campaign
Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, December 11, 2007
Health officials in China recently revealed that each year, nearly 5 million of the nation's patients suffer from healthcare-associated infections, according to Chinadaily.com. More than half of those infections were methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The Ministry of Health made the announcement at a signing ceremony to join the global campaign to stop infections.
The campaign, initiated by the World Alliance for Patient Safety and launched by the World Health Organization in 2004, promises to establish and implement standards to prevent infections. The campaign encourages better hand hygiene, blood safety, and injection safety practices, according to Chinadaily.com.
