Berwick, Spear call for improved processes to impact healthcare in editorial

While acknowledging that promoting the idea of improved processes in the healthcare system is not as glamorous as arguing for universal coverage, Don Berwick, president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Steven J. Spear, a senior lecturer at M.I.T., say that this is the only way to truly fix the U.S. healthcare system. In a recent Boston Globe editorial the two say that billions of dollars are lost each year because instead of focusing on how collecting data, implementing new processes, and examining how that correlates to payment, Americans have stuck with the same system of healthcare that has been in place for the last 50 years.
