China proposes cut on night surgeries

Patient Safety Monitor: Global Edition, November 27, 2007

China's Hospital Authority committee report suggests hospitals only operate on patients at night when life-threatening conditions exist, according to South China Morning Post.

The recent report comes after physicians at public hospitals fought for more rest days and holidays. The new proposal includes extending operating hours during the day, and opening more rooms for surgery, according to the article. Some surgeons expressed concern that eliminating many surgeries at night might increase the risk of patients' conditions worsening during the night.
