Hand hygiene: Just do it

In 2018, The Joint Commission (TJC) announced it would issue a Requirement for Improvement if it saw a single hand hygiene failure during a survey. In 2020, TJC and other accrediting organizations announced they were suspending surveys because of the COVID-19 virus—the spread of which can be stopped or considerably slowed by hand hygiene.
The necessity of good hand hygiene in healthcare is not new. Many infections besides COVID-19 are preventable with soap and hot water. It’s also an easy way to attack antibiotic-resistant diseases and hospital-associated infections.
