A Minnesota-based facility has aimed to increase patient and worker safety by installing patient-lifting equipment, according to ThisWeek Online.

Fairview Ridges Hospital, based in Burnsville, MN, purchased 30 ceiling-mounted, battery-operated slings, which are able to move patients to another location (such as a wheelchair) or reposition those who are bedridden. Fairview will also add air mats to be used during less complicated lifting procedures. The new equipment was acquired as part of an 18-month, $30.2 million renovation and expansion project.

Nurses at Fairview have reported that the equipment has greatly decreased the physical demands of their jobs. This is highly significant as the American Nurses Association reports that 52% of nurses have claimed to suffer from chronic back pain.
