Orienting new nurses to the 14 Forces of Magnetism
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 30, 2007
At Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System in Sarasota, FL--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2003--new nurse employees are expected to attend a full-day workshop that details the characteristics of the 14 Forces of Magnetism and how Sarasota Memorial creates an environment that reflects the Forces. For example, during discussion of Force 1: Quality of nursing leadership, the CNO presents the nursing department's and the hospital's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals, while nurse directors, managers, and preceptors explain the expectations for all nursing employees.
"Aligning these 14 Forces with the orientation process was designed to increase employee engagement in the organization's culture," says Ron Bass, MAEd, BSN, RN-BC, clinical educator. "The level of employee engagement correlates with quality performance, safety, employee satisfaction, and staff retention."
