Ask the expert: Exemplifying professional development programs
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 30, 2007
This week, a reader asks what professional development programs should be addressed in the written documentation. Read the response below from our advisor Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA,BC, vice president, patient services, at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA.
Q: What professional development programs should be addressed in the written documentation?
A: When exemplifying professional development programs in your written documentation, consider sharing human resource, administrative, and nursing policies. The narrative should illustrate the process for providing tuition reimbursement and the method used to determine employee eligibility. Include facilitywide, departmental, and unit-based education, as well as the various types of delivery methods for education.
When documenting participation during local, national, or international conferences or meetings, consider poster presentations and speaking engagements in addition to an attendee list. If there are specific councils within your shared governance structure that are responsible for supporting nurses who present at or attend conferences, or that provide oversight of participation, their decision-making processes should be included.
In your evidence, also include any types of scholarships available to nurses pertaining to these various educational activities. Supply the most recent list of participants who take advantage of opportunities for scholarships.
