Forty Wisconsin hospitals have worked with Marquette University in Milwaukee to develop a new nursing residency program, which is now boasting sky-high retention rates.

Officials say that the Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program, which was funded about a year ago with $2 million in federal grants, helps the new nurses acclimate to their new job at a faster pace. They attribute the program's success to the hospitals' ability to create a congenial, supportive working environment; monthly forums, for example, give new nurses specialized training, and group discussions allow nurses to vent their frustrations and share experiences.

The program touts a retention rate of 90% for its novice nurses. This is significant considering the cost of replacing one nurse is around $65,000.
