EMS sees recruitment and retention value in shared governance

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 23, 2007

Healthcare organizations are beginning to see more than just a nursing shortage-they are also facing a decrease in the numbers of paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). With falling numbers of recruits, emergency medical services (EMS) are looking to take action to retain and recruit. One idea, noted by Robert Powers, BS, RN, EMT-P, emergency preparedness coordinator for the Emergency Services Institute, WakeMed Health and Hospitals, in Raleigh, NC, is to exemplify an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designated organization's shared governance model. According to Powers, implementing a shared governance model into an EMS system will allow EMTs and paramedics to participate in decisions that affect them, and provide creative challenges, such as clinical career ladders or work groups created to solve departmental problems. Powers also sees shared governance councils as a way to reinforce and strengthen bonds between the department and employees, which is also seen with MRP designated organizations.
