As of this fall, New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service will offer a new degree in nursing management in an effort to counter the nationwide nursing shortage and promote retention. Created in partnership with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the Master of Science in Management - Concentration for Nurse Leadership program aims to improve the quality of nursing management by providing nurses with the skills necessary to oversee financial and administrative hospital operations; such skills include the ability to effectively manage staff, boost recruitment and retention, and improve patient care quality.
Currently, 28 nurses have enrolled in the degree program, including 25 from New York-Presbyterian. The hospital is encouraging participation by offering to pay the $35,000 tuition for each nurse who completes the program in exchange for a commitment to work at the hospital for two years.
