Critical steps to evidence-based practice
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 16, 2007
Before achieving ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation in July 2005, Centra Health in Lynchburg, VA, focused many of its efforts on evidence-based practice (EBP). Centra Health nurses use the following four steps-adapted from research from the University of Minnesota-when undertaking EBP projects:
- Identify the issue or problem based on an accurate analysis of current nursing knowledge and practice
- Search the literature for relevant research
- Evaluate the research evidence using established criteria regarding scientific merit
- Choose interventions and justify the selection with the most valid evidence
