Organizations convince company to pull ’naughty nurse’ gum ad
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, October 15, 2007
The image of a nurse getting into bed with a male patient because of the freshness of his gum was intended to draw laughs and arousal from the audience. Instead it drew ire from the Center for Nursing Advocacy and the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario.
Thanks to a feverish letter-writing and phone-calling campaign, the two organizations were able to convince Cadbury Schweppes to pull its Dentyne Ice ad from Canadian television. In total, more than 1,500 letters were sent explaining that the ad contributed to a damaging stereotype about the profession. The commercial can be viewed on YouTube here.
The Center aims to improve the image of nursing in the media. Visit the site here.
