Reach across the organization to educate all levels

Training employees, leaders, physicians, volunteers, students, and board members about ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation can be a difficult task. They are all busy and have other interest and demands. But planning and organizing education for all levels of staff across the organization is necessary to help cultivate a culture that embodies the 14 Forces of Magnetism. Some of the key trouble spots you will have to overcome as you develop a training plan are outlined below:

  1. 'I don't have time for this!' Physicians, executives, and board members are busy and they will have difficulty attending extra meetings. Therefore, get invited to their regular meetings and provide tailored, bulleted handouts they can use throughout the process.
  2. Communicating to the masses. Some groups, such as the nursing and medical staffs in most hospitals, are large. Take steps to customize the MRP message to each group-only nursing has all the details. To do so, you may need to use existing department or service meetings, or even hold shift meetings with some groups.
  3. 'Just give me the facts!' No one wants to be deluged with needless information. Therefore, tailor all information to the audience. For instance, nonclinical employees need to know that nursing is seeking designation for the organization. It is also good for them to know that an appraiser may ask them what they think about the care that RNs provide-these employees are everywhere in the organization and have many opportunities to witness nurses providing special care to patients and families.
