Ask the expert: Appraisers interaction with nonnursing staff

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 9, 2007

This week, a reader asks which staff members appraisers will speak to during the site visit, other than nurses. Read the response below from our advisor Gina Boring, MSN, RN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® director and director of the Ohio partnership for excellence, Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.

Q: Who will appraisers speak to, other than nurses, during the site visit for Magnet Recognition Program® designation?

A: When appraisers come to the institution during the site visit phase to clarify and verify the information presented in the written documentation, they will make an effort to speak to a multitude of nursing and nonnursing staff. For example, the appraisers may ask administrative assistants how they interact with nurses or ask housekeepers how nurses treat them. Appraisers may approach nursing assistants to discuss whether nurses include them in unit activities. Additionally, appraisers may seek out physicians, patients, and community members to inquire abut their perceptions of nurses and how they think nurses contribute to the organization's success.

When preparing for the site visit, it's important to note that professional recognition does not occur overnight-it is nurtured and developed over time. Seek the best evidence to display the image of your organization's nurses, and be sure nonnursing personnel, professional colleagues, and community leaders can speak about nurses and their influence at all levels and in all areas inside and outside of the facility.
