Treatment in 30-minutes or a free trip to the movies

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, October 2, 2007

The emergency department (ED) at Saint Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO-an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2004-is making an unusual commitment to its patients: be seen by a doctor or nurse practitioner within 30 minutes or be given free movie tickets to make up for the delay. The ED sees more than 37,000 patients a year who are experiencing everything from chest pains to broken bones and has made the commitment as part of its efforts to provide high-quality patient care and value patients' time. ED staff at Saint Joseph recognize that on some days it will be impossible to see every patient within 30 minutes, but according to Patrick Greenwood, MD, emergency services department chairman, if the hospital communicates with patients and implements service recovery, then it provides good customer service.
