Support council chairs through leadership
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 18, 2007
To help support staff nurses as council leaders and facilitators, Battle Creek Health System, offered an eight-hour (8 CECH) Leadership program to promote the effective running of Shared Governance Council meetings. Each council had at least one Nursing Management and Education representative volunteering to support council functions, and participated in the educational programs.
The education program addresses the basics of council leadership, including the specific roles of each council member; the charters; how to draft meeting agendas and minutes, and track time; establishing ground rules; basic group dynamics and helpful communication skills; methods of brainstorming; consensus building, setting priorities, conflict resolution; and an introduction to evidence-based practice.
The council leaders met with the manager and director rep, and the CNS for Professional Practicewould for a one-hour monthly meeting to discuss agenda development for upcoming meetings.
