Two Tennessee nursing students make the most of summer vacation

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, September 10, 2007

What did you do this summer? Whether you took an extra class, worked a few hours at a hospital, or split your time between the beach and barbecues, it'd be tough to top University of Tennessee nursing students Debbie Persell and Beth Fiske.

Persell and Fiske spent four weeks in Hiroshima, Japan, to study some of the long-term effects caused by the atomic blast in 1945. The trip was coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, and the Hiroshima International Council for Health Care of the Radiation-exposed. Persell and Fiske, both students in the Homeland Security Nursing program, met with scientists to learn about research that has been going on for years.

The two students were also able to spend some time with the survivors who were affected by the blast, which occurred 62 years ago.
