New training seeks to turn retention tide in Nevada

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, September 3, 2007

If you take a severe nursing shortage and combine it with some scary statistics about retention, what are you left with? A bad nursing situation in Nevada. A recent University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) study revealed that 30% of nurses leave their job in the first year and 57% leave in the first two years in the state.

To help change the worrying trend, UNLV and Valley Health System are launching a one-year residency program-one of the few in the country-to help ease new nurses into the hospital environment. Mentors will play a crucial role in helping with the transition.

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration contributed a $646,000 grant to help launch the three-year pilot program that will help 30 new nurse graduates annually.
