Effective leaders support nurses

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 4, 2007

Nurse leaders can inspire and support staff by offering words of encouragement, giving public recognition, and spending time on units so nurses can approach them with questions or concerns.

In 1992, Stephen Covey introduced seven characteristics of effective leaders in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. These traits can be found among the nurse leaders in ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designated organizations. According to Covey, effective leaders:

  • Continually engage themselves in lifelong learning
  • Are service oriented and concerned with the common good
  • Radiate positive energy
  • Believe in other people
  • Lead balanced lives and see life as an adventure
