Health resource center is a hub for research

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 4, 2007

The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) in Macon--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) recipient in 2005--built a 10,000 square-foot health resource center to serve as a hub for patient, staff, and community education. The health resource center was built from community funding and is used daily by community residents, students, and professionals, says Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, MRP director. The resource center employees a full-time librarian, a professional assistant, and a community assistant. "The health resource center is our hub for both patient education and staff development support, and it's the point of distribution for our life support materials, clinical ladders, critical care materials, etc.," says Montgomery.

The resource center librarian serves numerous roles and is a valuable resource for the facility. The librarian serves on the research and practice council; maintains the intranet site to allow nurses round-the-clock access to clinical research and evidence-based practice (EBP) material; ensures MCCG nurses have the materials they need to support EBP (including paper, online, and multimedia resources); teaches classes on accessing relevant and accurate information on the Internet; assists in writing grants; and serves as a resource for publishing.
