Playing the role of an educator

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 28, 2007

Preceptors wear many hats, one of which is educator. Preceptors assess preceptees' readiness to learn, help them identify areas of competence they need to improve and grow in, or just become familiar with a new practice setting. The following are five ways preceptors with an educator role can help a preceptee:

  1. Assess learning needs and readiness to learn
  2. Plan learning activities and experiences
  3. Implement a learning plan
  4. Facilitate improvement in identified competencies
  5. Evaluate job performance
