With the goal of improving patient safety and streamlining the nursing workflow, a Pennsylvania hospital has brought a new IT system into its obstetrics (OB) unit.

Officials at St. Luke's Hospital, based in Allentown, PA and part of St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network, say that the new perinatal system will help healthcare workers in the OB reduce risks and avoid superfluous charting. The new technology combines the fetal strip and the mother's record, meaning labor and delivery nurses at St. Luke's need only log into the system once to complete documentation and administer medication to both the mother and baby.

The system was developed by the Atlanta-based company McKesson Corp., which provides risk reduction tools to improve patient safety within perinatal units.
