Florida hospital finds a solution to retain new graduates

Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF) has long offered preceptoring and mentoring to its new nurse graduates, but it wanted to find an additional program that would help its new graduates succeed and retain them for years to come. So the hospital recently adopted the Versant RN Residency program. According to BHSF's CNO Deborah Mulvihill, the hospital decided that Versant's strategy for educating new nurses would enhance BHSF's ability to cultivate expert RN staff and ensure standardized nursing practices with the best possible patient outcomes. The residency program is evidence-based and Web-facilitated, which allows BHSF online access to the program content, as well as the ability to schedule activities, communicate important information, and evaluate the progress of new graduates' skills. The first residency group started two weeks ago with 105 newly-graduated nurses. The new graduates will complete the 18-week program with support from senior nurses to ensure that core competencies are met, such as being able to provide quality care to patients, mastering critical thinking skills, and time management. Baptist Health has six hospitals in its system and all will implement this program. Two of the hospitals are ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipients: Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital.
