Four ways to encourage peer recognition

Most healthcare employees are motivated by passion for caring for others-both patients and colleagues. For a majority of nurses, recognition and reward for exceptional contributions to patients and colleagues demonstrates appreciation, value, and caring by peers, managers, administration, and the healthcare organization. To create a culture of nursing excellence as you pursue ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation, encourage peer recognition by following these four examples:
- Encourage staff to e-mail the CNO or project director with good things about each other, and read the notes in staff meetings
- Encourage staff to provide a verbal thank you to coworkers on a daily basis
- Supply a "recognition box" with cards, sticky notes, happy-face stickers, and other supplies, and place it in a common area such as the nursing lounge. Encourage staff nurses to use material from the box frequently to acknowledge coworker's good performance.
- Place a journal on each unit, and dedicate it to the staff at the beginning of the year for them to write in when coworkers do something nice or above and beyond expectations, so they can share each other's accomplishments.
