With the goal of improving nurse and physician training, millions of dollars in federal grants have been awarded to schools and facilities nationwide, AHA News reports.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) said it hopes to serve disadvantaged populations by providing resources for nursing education, particularly amongst racial and ethnic minorities. Officials say they hope to provide support for those groups that are underrepresented in the nursing profession.

HRSA gave out 23 Nursing Workforce Diversity Program awards totaling $6.8 million. They also expect to distribute 29 additional awards to support family medicine residency programs (totaling $5.5 million), five Preventative Medicine Residency Training Grants Program awards (totaling $1.2 million), and five awards to universities supporting primary care assistant training (totaling $907,928).
