Creating and sticking to a documentation timeline
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 14, 2007
Before writing the documentation, set a timeline and stick to it. In most organizations this is nearly an impossible task, especially if writers are involved in other organizational operations. These circumstances require that you build flexibility into the timeline to accommodate your organization's demands.
As a general guide, begin your documentation preparation for your initial submission approximately 12 to 24 months prior to submission. Submissions for redesignation usually require a shorter lead time. The initial submission requires significantly more time spent in organizational tasks, such as thoroughly reviewing the gap analysis, ascertaining the availability of other fiscal and human resources beyond the nursing department necessary to complete this phase, and becoming familiar with the strengths of the others helping in documentation preparation.
