The nursing workforce shortage has become a central topic in Illinois, according to Dean Martinez, secretary for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), in an article in The Southern Illinoisan.

Last year, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich created the Illinois Center for Nursing, which is part of the IDFPR. The Center has been working to increase the number of nurses in the state; one specific technique that board members have undertaken is to focus on retaining nursing instructors. Additionally, money for scholarships is being sought for those entering the nursing field and requiring financial assistance.

The nursing shortage in the state is calculated to increase by more than 21,000 by the year 2020.
