There is often confusion between competencies and mandatory training required by regulatory agencies or institutional policy. The difference between the mandatory training and competency validation is that the latter requires demonstration of the skill, whereas the former does not necessarily do so. The list below outlines some of the common safety topics required by regulatory agencies:

  • Cultural competence and ethical conduct
  • Privacy and confidentiality issues (e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 [HIPAA requirements)
  • Fire safety
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Emergency codes
  • Electrical safety
  • Infection control and blood-borne pathogens
  • Institutional safety plan and patient safety
  • Back safety
  • Emergency response to various threats (e.g., bombs)
