The risk of late-onset ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in intensive care patients rises as the nurse-to-patient ratio drops, a recent study suggests.
Investigators from the University of Geneva Hospitals in Switzerland published the study in the journal Critical Care. The study reports that among critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation, the chance of acquiring late-onset VAP (meaning it occurred six days or more after intubation) was 58% lower when there were higher nurse to patient ratios than with lower ratios.
However, nurse staffing levels did not appear to affect the incidence of early-onset disease, the study noted.
