A couple of Northern California hospitals have newly implemented a nurse training and mentoring program with the goal of significantly reducing turnover.

The VA Palo Alto Healthcare System in Palo Alto, CA, and Doctors Hospital of Manteca, CA, have become involved in the training program, run by Versant Advantage, Inc., a nonprofit extension of Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. The training program takes 22 weeks for pediatric RNs and 18 weeks for those working in adult units.

The training costs $5,000 per nurse, but hospitals who have already taken part in the program report a significant drop in turnover rates. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, CA, reported that turnover is 5% among nurses who have completed the program, compared with an overall turnover rate of 7-9% throughout the hospital.
