Ask the expert: Advance career development for employees
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 24, 2007
This week, a reader asks how organizations can support career development opportunities for employees wishing to become staff nurses. Read the response below from our advisor Gina Boring, BSN, RN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® project coordinator, Aultman Health Foundation, Canton, OH.
Q: How can organizations support career development for employees wishing to become staff nurses?
A: Organizational support of career development must be met with an equal measure of leadership support. Tuition reimbursement programs offer career support for those wishing to return to the classroom. Flexible, creative scheduling to accommodate time spent in class also demonstrates support for career development and advancement. A facility that serves as a clinical site for nursing or allied health students provides students with the opportunity to be mentored by staff.
Affiliations with higher centers of learning also allow staff the opportunity to speak with these students. This type of networking has provided many nurses and allied health professionals with the encouragement to continue on their educational journeys.
