Practice councils set tone for shared governance

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 17, 2007

When implementing shared governance, it is important to develop a practice council. The practice council's purpose and responsibility is to set the criteria for evidence-based practice consistent with established/evolving professional standards and regulating agencies. Most of the other council's work will depend on the foundational work completed and managed by the practice council, which has the control and authority to make decisions affecting policies and practice for the work that they do. A practice council does the following:

  • Defines, implements, and maintains practice
  • Selects theory base
  • Sets practice standards
  • Sets performance standards
  • Defines career advancement
