Ask the expert: Overseeing evidence collection

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 10, 2007

This week, a reader asks if it's possible to appoint an external person to oversee evidence collection. Read the response below from our advisor Elise Gropper, PhD, APRN, CPHQ, CNAA, BC, president of Gropper & Associates, Inc., Coral Springs, FL.

Q: Is it possible to appoint an external person to oversee evidence collection?

A: Depending on the responsibilities outlined in the project director job description, the director may or may not oversee evidence collection. Other ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®-designated organizations have appointed internal persons other than the project director to lead this project. The one advantage of appointing an internal candidate over an external candidate is that the internal person knows your organization's culture, politics, and players. This understanding helps support your unique ownership of this journey. If you desire to hire an external person, he or she must not forget that ownership of overseeing the evidence collection process must be firmly based within the organization itself.

  • The external person to oversee evidence collection could be on of the following:
  • A faculty member who is familiar with the organization by virtue of performing on-site clinical rotations with nursing students
  • A part-time staff member who is committed to the organization
  • A professional writer
