With the state falling short by more than 4,600 registered nurses, several California hospitals are taking on imaginative, original tactics in their quest to recruit nurses and fill vacancies.

Scripps Health in San Diego, for example, is holding recruitment events at upscale resorts to highlight the healthcare system's belief in a healthy work/life balance. In San Diego County, the demand for nurses will grow by 27% over the next seven years, according to San Diego Workforce Partnership, a regional training and career development agency. Scripps also intends to kick off a Web-based recruitment campaign this summer to draw in nurses from all over the country.

Additionally, hospitals throughout Northern California are handing nursing students thousands of dollars in bonuses in exchange for promises of employment following graduation.
