Wyoming hospital focuses on recruitment and retention

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 3, 2007

According to the Research and Planning Office at the Wyoming Department of Employment, nurses in Wyoming are leaving the profession at a higher rate than teachers or state employees are leavings theirs. In an effort to make sure its nurses do not follow the state's trends, Wyoming Medical Center, located in Casper, WY, has implemented several strategies that focus on nurse recruitment and retention. The facility recently hired a recruiter whose sole focus will be on the recruitment of nurses, and it has initiated team nursing in an effort to improve nurse's job satisfaction. Team nursing involves grouping several nurses together to care for a larger group of patients, rather than having individual nurses caring for five or more patients on their own. Wyoming Medical Center is also pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation. The facility will be surveyed this fall by the ANCC to see if it will receive designation and be among the more than 250 organizations nationwide that have been designated. If successful, Wyoming Medical Center will be the first facility in Wyoming to receive this accreditation.
