Confusion surrounding the movement toward competency-based education is a result of the numerous definitions used to address this concept, and definitions vary widely. One definition is that competency is a broad statement describing an aspect of practice that must be developed and demonstrated, and competence is the achievement and integration of many competencies into practice, or the overall ability to perform. Competency is about what people can do. It is the integration of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of practice and involves:

  • The ability to perform in a given context
  • The capacity to transfer knowledge and skills to new tasks and situations
