Ask the expert: Demonstrating the role of the CNO

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 26, 2007

This week, a reader asks how to articulate the leadership role of the CNO in the written documentation. Read the response below from our advisor Barbara Wadsworth, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA, BC, vice president, patient services, Abington Memorial Hospital, Abington, PA.

Q: How do you articulate the leadership role of the CNO in the written documentation?

A: In the written documentation, it's important to explain the reporting structure throughout all levels and areas of the institution, and to clearly articulate the leadership role of the CNO. The COO, CEO, or another member of the executive leadership might write a story for the written documentation that speaks to the CNO's commitment to leadership. The CNO must demonstrate a history of successful implementation of change while including other organizational leaders in these efforts. Demonstrating the CNO's involvement in teams, councils, and/or committees that have produced positive results throughout the organization is important to demonstrating his or her role collaboration and active engagement in hospital operations. The following are a few examples to support this evidence:

  • Include the facility's organizational chart, the board of trustees' chart, and the nursing organizational chart
  • Include a list of the committees that the CNO chairs or one that demonstrates the depth of the CNO's role
  • List a summary of the CNO's goals and achievements
