New legislation introduced by U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) would provide programs and grants meant to help recruit, retain, and train nurses in rural areas.

The Nursing Education and Quality of Health Care Act of 2007 would support and create demonstration projects that integrate patient safety practices into nursing education programs. It is designed to increase the number of nursing faculty by providing scholarships and increasing the availability of online and accelerated doctoral programs, among other approaches.

According to a press release from Clinton's office, a number of nursing organizations, including the American Organization of Nurse Executives, have endorsed the bill.
