The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) recently announced the launching of a pilot program that will establish a multi-campus nurse training program.

The VA is expected to partner with 12 nursing schools nationwide over the next three years, with the goal of ensuring that a nursing shortage does not adversely affect veterans' access to healthcare. The $40-million program aims to expand educational and research opportunities, broaden the reach of VA teaching faculty, and bolster nurse retention and recruitment efforts.

Participating schools will provide faculty appointments to VA clinical nurse experts. As part of an expansive curriculum emphasizing quality improvement and evidence-based practice, students will be taught about the specific needs of the veteran population.
