Survey reveals healthier work environments at designated organizations

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 12, 2007

A survey that involved more than 4,000 acute and critical care nurses in all 50 states and the District of Columbia rated collaboration and communication, leadership and satisfaction, patient outcomes, and support for professional growth and development higher when working for an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP)-designated organization--or a Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence organization--than in those facilities without such designations. The results were released by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, the Gannett Healthcare Group, and the Bernard Hodes Group, and also revealed that nurses rated quality care in the unit and organization much lower in facilities that had not achieved or were not pursuing MRP status. In addition, 71% of nurses from MRP designated facilities, and those currently pursuing the designation, rated their managers as having excellent/good decision-making skills while only 54% of nurses from organizations not on the journey rated their managers as having excellent/good decision-making skills.
