A Washington school will now offer a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree, after being granted approval by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The degree was initiated by the Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing in Spokane, WA, as a response to the substantial discrepancy between the number of prepared graduates in the healthcare industry and employer demands.

WSU currently offers both bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing. The PhD program will enroll nine students this summer and hopes to grow to 46 enrolled students by its fourth year.
