New program prepares nurses for leadership roles

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 5, 2007

An academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital, which received ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation in 2003, has introduced a new Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program to educate master's prepared nurses for leadership roles in the management of healthcare delivery. The MGH Institute of Health Professions created the DNP program following the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's 2004 decision that advanced practice education for nurses should proceed from the master's to the doctoral level by 2015. It is intended that graduates of the program will go on to clinical, educational, and executive roles, following study in areas such as healthcare policy, organizational dynamics, healthcare financing, and research utilization. MGH Institute is one of the first graduate nursing programs to develop the DNP degree in New England, and offers a choice of six elective concentrations: advanced clinical practice, teaching, global health, clinical investigation, informatics, and nursing administration.
