An East Texas medical center expects to kick off a nursing residency program this week, the first of its kind in the area.
Staff members of Nacogdoches Medical Center have been working since December with Versant, a non-profit organization, to get the 18-week paid program started. It will be offered in January and June of each year; each enrolled nurse is required to accept a two-year commitment to the medical center upon program completion.
The program is expected to help nurses jump start their career and build their confidence, easing the transition from nursing school to the clinical environment. About 25% of the program will be classroom work taught by the hospital's physicians, nurses, and physical therapists.
