Advanced degrees help nurses climb the clinical ladder

Organizations establish stipulations for staff nurses to advance on the clinical ladder, such as making sure nurses have the required educational degree for the next level. Dorothy A. Garman, RN, MSN, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI, shares how staff nurses at Newport Hospital climb the clinical ladder:
- To advance from Clinical Nurse II to Clinical Nurse III, staff nurses must have a BSN or a certification in his or her specialty
- To advance to Clinical Nurse IV, a BSN and a certification are required
- Newport Hospital is currently working on requirements to make a Master's degree the criteria for nurses to advance to Clinical Nurse V
