Demonstrating support for continuing education

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 22, 2007

Force of Magnetism 14: Professional development includes opportunities to discuss how an organization provides educational advancement to nurses, including tuition reimbursement, and how this is valuable for personal and professional growth. Linda Klavon, MS, RN, CS, APRN, BC, CEN, clinical nurse specialist for professional practice at Battle Creek Health System in Battle Creek, MI, shares how Battle Creek enforces Force 14.

The hospital created a fund for non-management associates (RNs, etc.) to pay for academic course work related to their field of study (BSN or MSN degrees). Another fund was set up to pay for nurses to attend conferences.

To further support ongoing nurse education, the hospital makes scholarships and loan programs available, and a local university offers a 40% discount in tuition to employees. Other continuing education courses for staff nurses are financed through individual departments, including the days off to attend class, and employees have access to continuing education courses through an Intranet program.
