Beware of dangerous drug-nutrient interactions
Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, May 21, 2007
Like the scenes that make up a movie, nutrients such as vitamins and minerals are essential building blocks. Nutrients promote the healthy functioning of all systems within the body. Deficiencies of vital nutrients and minerals can lead to malnutrition, chronic conditions, and be the precursors to many diseases. Thus, as a nurse, you must consider the scheduling of medications that could potentially cause drug-nutrient interactions at times relative to meals.
Remember these tips for avoiding drug-nutrient interactions to help keep clients safe:
- Verify physician orders
- Check common nutrient interactions against current medication lists
- Determine whether a drug should be administered on an empty stomach or with food or water
- Administer vitamin and mineral supplements before or after other medications
