Mississippi University expands enrollment

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, May 21, 2007

An extra 40 nursing students will soon be taking classes at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in an effort to help reduce the growing shortage in the region.

A three-year, $750,000 grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration has helped to launch an accelerated program for 20 of the students, who can use a bachelor's degree in another field as a jumpstart to a bachelor's degree in nursing. The program will be chopped to 15 months, taking nine months off the usual requirement.

The other 20 new students will take courses at a satellite school-which will be staffed by four new faculty members-that will rely heavily on distance learning with the Jackson campus.
